Steel Phantom (Kennywood)

Park Image

Scaleable build shapes and sound tool by bestdani

Construction of Steel Phantom began during Labor Day weekend in early September 1990. It was set to open on May 4, 1991, but this was ultimately delayed six days to May 10. When it opened, it set new records in drop height and speed, in addition to featuring four inversions.

Kennywood is my home park for over 40 years, so I might be judging this a little more harshly than I should :-)

Thunderbolt: The first turnaround seems way too fast. I remember it being more like the Jack Rabbit turnaround. I could be wrong. I'm old enough to remember that there was a tunnel on that first turnaround and there wasn't a tunnel on the Jack Rabbit :-) Other than that, the pace was good. I hate the fact they added trim brakes before the last two drops. Blah.

Phantom: I love, love, LOVE the Arrow lift hill sound!!!!! Ah, memories. Pacing is spot on, though I thought there was a little more time between the batwing and corkscrew, but I'm trying to remember something from 25 years ago. And you have the trim brake before the vertical loop. Wish it wasn't there, but whatever. Nice station design. Really reminds me that this station is from the old Laser Loop (which I rode a number of times).

Pitt Fall: Glad to see its inclusion. Unfortunately I almost always ended up in the gondola facing the parking lot...

Overall, I really enjoyed these recreations. The interaction between the Phantom and Thunderbolt is one of the great parts about Kennywood, and I'm glad that when Phantom was turned into Revenge they kept this interaction in place.
